WATERVILLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter in Waterville is opening a new facility that can accommodate more people and offer a wider range of services.

The new 40-bed facility can hold more than 50 people on a given night, and it has extra emergency space for colder nights in the winter.

Officials say the shelter will not only provide space for people to stay, but also offer programs to help people reintegrate back into the community.  A key part of that is programs and resources dedicated to helping people find jobs and permanent places to live.

"We partner with the new library employment program so people go there and take a resume class," Shelter Executive Director Betty Palmer said.  "They come back here and a volunteer works with them to get that resume completed, or they need a parenting class and someone comes in from one of our local agencies to offer the parenting class."

The $2.7 million facility was funded largely by donations.  The new shelter will be able to start accepting people by the end of this week.
