LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Independent Senate candidate Angus King is defending the state program that provides laptop computers to public school students in Maine.

The topic came up Wednesday during a debate by the three leading Senate candidates in Lewiston.

King hatched the idea of providing laptops to all public middle school students during his final term as governor at a time when the state was sitting on a surplus. The state moved forward with the plan and it has since expanded to include many highs schools.

The first-in-the-nation program has proven to be a success despite criticism of its costs.

King said he won't apologize for the program. He said the idea was to give the "key and tool for the 21st century."
