Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County in Ellsworth provides non-medical assistance and respite to end-of-life patients and their families, support to those who grieve the loss of a loved one, and education and advocacy for the community.
HVHC staff and volunteers work as team members with local physicians, in-patient and residential facilities, home care organizations, churches, neighborhood organizations and schools to provide care for individuals and families. Volunteer services include end-of-life vigils, respite for caregivers, emotional support and companionship, light bedside care, running errands, and simply being there to listen and keep company.
In particular, the gift of music is offered by the a cappella choral group "Evensong," singing for patients who are living at the end of life. This is a unique program that is much loved by patients & their families and is highly gratifying to the choral members as well.
Operating with a very small paid staff, HVHC relies almost exclusively on their 200+ volunteers across Blue Hill, Bucksport, Ellsworth/Downeast, Mount Desert Island, and communities in between. Virtually without exception, families & caregivers deeply appreciate the loving kindnesses provided by these compassionate volunteers.
