Les Miserables was originally a novel written by Victor Hugo. It was adapted into a hit Broadway musical, and the musical is now being turned into a movie starring Hugh Jackman.
Jackman was born on Oct. 12, 1968. He plays Jean Valjean.
Although he's the hero of the story, Valjean is also a criminal. He was thrown into prison for stealing bread to feed his sister's starving children. Even after he is released, he is constantly hounded by an obsessed police inspector named Javert. Throughout the story, Javert only refers to him by his prison number, never his name.
