BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Former Governor John Baldacci has openly supported same-sex marriage since we last saw it on the ballot in 2009. Wednesday night he held the first of two spaghetti suppers to spread the word on the need for marriage equality.
Governor John Baldacci said, "You got to make sure that people get out there and realize how important their vote is. This is part of keeping the pressure up and energize the people to get out there and continue to call, write letters, give rides to the poles, fill out absentee ballots."
Former Governor Baldacci served plates of spaghetti and chatted with voters to encourage them to vote yes on Question one.
The devout Catholic openly supports the right for all couples to get married. He partnered with Catholics for Marriage Equality joined forces to show people that many catholics support Question one.
Sister Jeannine Gramick with the Roman Catholic church spoke with attendees, "It is not just a vote for lesbian and gay couples and their right, because they do have the right to get married. It is a vote to support families. You can be a good Catholic and vote with your conscience and vote for marriage equality."
Governor Baldacci said he is confident this is the year Question One will pass, but both he and his supporters are not taking any chances.
"Keep our fingers crossed, but don't do anything until after eight o'clock on election night," said Baldacci.
A second spaghetti supper will be held in Portland on October 26th. Attendees are asked to make a five dollar donation at the door.
