LAMOINE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- State police are continuing to look into why a man from Lamoine shot and killed his father and uncle on Tuesday before he was fatally shot by police.

Investigators were back on the scene Wednesday at 16 Bobolink Lane in Lamoine, where they say 27-year-old Leon Tilden shot and killed his father Robert Tilden and uncle Russell Pinkham. The gunman was later shot by a state police detective and died from his wounds at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Investigators are still trying to determine why Tilden killed the two men. Stan Olencki lives across the road from the Tilden's farm. He says he knew Robert Tilden well saying he was a man who used to work hard to support his family.

Tilden used to work as a clam digger but also made a living off of his farm.

"Had his own garden...raised his own chickens...and sheep and things like that to provide for his family," said Olencki, "and I couldn't ask for a better friend or a better man."

Leon Tilden did not have much of a criminal history in Hancock County. His last arrest came in 2007 for driving with a suspended license.

The Maine Attorney General's Office is investigating to see if police were justified in using lethal force against him.
