AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine DOT and city officials heard from concerned drivers who travel Route 4.

People who spoke at Wednesday night's public hearing say it is difficult and dangerous to make a turn during heavy 4-lane traffic.

The Maine DOT says that stretch of road between Auburn and Turner is not what they consider to be a high-crash location, but they are willing to consider making changes to the road.

Some drivers say a fifth turning lane would make the road safer.

They also say that the DOT should consider more than just the statistics when deciding how to move forward.

"I saw two mack trucks or semi's coming down the road, and the one on the left lane was trying to get in front of the one in the right lane, and the one in the right lane wasn't going to let him," Carmine Frumiento said. "Thankfully for whatever reason I happen to see this and as I'm looking in my rear view mirror realized this is not where I wanted to be."

Stephen Landry of the Maine DOT says some of the factors causing accidents are things the DOT can't control, like distracted driving and aggressive driving. The DOT will take Wednesday nights comments into consideration before deciding how to move forward.
