ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Emergency Management officials say a little preparation now can save big headaches later if this does turn out to be a major storm.

Many Mainers are able to recite most of the common advice, like filling your bathtub, stocking up on batteries, water and non-perishable food, and looking around your yard to make sure there's nothing that can act as a projectile on your house.

But there are three things York County Emergency Management has found people do not tend to remember. First, have medication ready to bring with you if you need to evacuate, and know what you take in case you need a refill. You don't want to be trying to track down "that pink pill" at 2 a.m.

Second, have supplies for your pet, including a carrier or cage for the pet to sleep in, if you need to leave.

And finally, check to see if your elderly or disabled neighbors have a plan and a place to go in an emergency. You might save a life.

For a complete list of suggested steps to take now, visit FEMA's website.

The American Red Cross also has a Hurricane App that allows you to monitor conditions and prepare for the storm. You can find it for free in the iTunes or Google Play app stores.
