PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine is on the fringe of Hurricane Sandy but the storm is still packing enough wallop for some schools to close early, cruise ships to cancel stops in Portland and Bar Harbor, and one town to encourage residents to evacuate low-lying areas.

The Coast Guard says the ports of Portland, Maine, and Portsmouth, N.H., took the unusual step of closing to commercial traffic at 5 p.m. Monday because of anticipated high winds.

Maine Emergency Management Agency Director Robert McAleer said his biggest concern is wind, with sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts up to 60 mph.

Central Maine Power reported 5,700 outages Monday afternoon.

There were no mandatory evacuations, but Wells urged people to leave their homes and businesses along low-lying areas east of U.S. 1.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Some Maine schools are closing early before the heaviest rain and wind from Hurricane Sandy.

Maine Emergency Management Agency Director Robert McAleer said his biggest concern is wind, which is expected to cause widespread power outages. The state's utilities say they have crews poised to deal with expected power outages, including some from Canada.

The National Weather Service says Maine will see sustained winds of 50 mph, with higher gusts, from Monday afternoon and through the night.

Most of the flights at the Portland International Jetport are canceled. Virtually all schools opened Monday but some were closing early, before the worst of the wind.

Most fishermen and boaters have taken precautions. Lobsterman Greg Turner of Scarborough moved his traps to deeper water, while others moved theirs to land.
