LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - One of the six candidates for U.S. Senate in Maine used the final debate to announce he's dropping out of the race, and another used his closing statement as an opportunity to lead a prayer.

Independent Steve Woods announced he was dropping out and urged his supporters Saturday night to back former Gov. Angus King on Election Day.

All of the candidates, including Democrat Cynthia Dill and Republican Charlie Summers, emphasized their independence during the debate at Lewiston Middle School. But the others blamed their parties for causing gridlock.

The candidates are vying for the seat that's being vacated by U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Candidate Danny Dalton also caught fellow candidates by surprise by reciting the Lord's Prayer. The candidates quickly bowed their heads.
