AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - State Police say a standoff in an Auburn parking lot has ended peacefully.

The incident started around Noon Monday when police say a man stole a woman's purse in the Wal*Mart parking lot and took off.

He was stopped at the Shaw's Supermarket on Center Street where he holed up inside his Jeep and threatened suicide.

The Shaw's and the parking lot were evacuated and nearby streets were shut down while police from Auburn and the State Police Tactical Squad responded.

State Police spokesman Steve McCausland says the standoff ended peacefully just before 4:00 PM when the suspect, 45 year old Randolph Nutter, surrendered to police.

There were no injuries.
