SANFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A young girl from Sanford is living with a rare disease that not many people have heard about, but Ashley Colarossi is hoping to change that.

She held a bake sale on Saturday with her own homemade confections to raise money and awareness of her disease, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or RSD.

It is a chronic pain disorder characterized by severe burning pain, pathological changes in bone and skin, tissue swelling and extreme sensitivity to touch.

Although there are medications to help most patients with the discomfort, a cure has yet to be discovered.

Ashley says RSD is more common than statistics say and often goes misdiagnosed.

"A half to 1-million people in America have it, but it's severely under diagnosed. It took me three years to be diagnosed with it. And doctors kept telling me I was crazy basically because they couldn't comprehend the pain and the level it was at. They thought it was crazy for the injury I had for the pain to be that severe," says Ashley.
