UPDATE: 4:00 PM... Dems elect Rep. Mark Eves to serve as Speaker

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The newly elected Democratic majority in the Maine House is electing its leaders and nominating a new speaker for the upcoming two-year session.

The person who wins the nomination for speaker at Tuesday afternoon's caucus will likely be elected to the post, now that the Democrats have won the legislative majority back from the Republicans.

The Democrats' race includes Rep. Terry Hayes of Buckfield, the current assistant Democratic leader; fourth-term Rep. Michael Carey of Lewiston, Rep. Mark Eves of North Berwick, who's starting his third term; and Rep. Diane Russell of Portland, who's starting her third term.

Democrats will also choose between Reps. Seth Berry of Bowdoinham and Mark Dion of Portland for majority leader.

The current House speaker, Republican Rep. Robert Nutting of Oakland, is running for minority leader.
