BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A shelter is looking for homes for rescue dogs from Puerto Rico.

It's part of a program called All Sato Rescue that partners with shelters here in the Northeast to find homes for strays. According to the All Sato Rescue, there are more than 150,000 strays in Puerto Rico. The word "sato" is Puerto Rican slang for stray mutt. Eleven of the rescues arrived at the Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick Wednesday night.

Executive Director Karen Stimpson says the Humane Society had plenty of space and demand for adoptable dogs.

"When a shelter or group reaches out to us and they need help saving perfectly healthy adoptable dogs that would otherwise be euthanized, be they local or as far away as Puerto Rico, we say yes we can help" Stimpson said.

The dogs will be available for adoption on Saturday at noon.
