NEWPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- A concert at Nokomis Regional High School Thursday evening made a world of difference for music students in RSU 19.

The district went into this school year with a massive budget shortfall. As a result, officials have recently had to make more than $700,000 in cuts, including about $30,000 that would have gone to support music programs.

RSU 19's music director Andrew Maderios says it's meant no funding for new instruments, equipment and buses to take students performers to events.

In response the district's music booster's club has kicked in support by using admission fees from the concert to help with activities. Parents say they're also working on finding new ways to keep raising money to support the kids.

Thursday's concert was headlined by trumpet performer and Nokomis alum Trent Austin. To help the kids and his alma mater he performed free of charge.

If you would like to lend support to the music program in RSU 19, you can reach the district's music director Andrew Maderios at (207)368-4354, extension 650 or by e-mail to
