DAMARISCOTTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The donations have poured in for the past week from people and businesses in the midcoast, but they saved space for a final few big ones.

Damariscotta Hardware matched customer donations, so they could give three pallet loads of badly needed supplies. Bleach and brooms, tarps and trash bags, safety glasses and gloves and a lot more.

The organizers of the relief project say it's been like this since they started last week up at the Legion Hall. Trucker Larry Sidelinger says he's been amazed to see what people will do.

This is a pretty well targeted relief effort. Its going to specific neighborhoods in the Rockaway section of Long Island and to Staten Island, where local people need the supplies to clean repair and re-build their homes.

Most hurricanes happen much farther away from here, and people here still help. But this one was close, people here know people there. Cold weather has come. People here understand that, too. This truck can't fix every house smacked by Sandy, But in those neighborhoods where it rolls in, they'll know people here in Maine cared.
