WALES, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Maine Warden Service says that two men firing at the same deer led up to a deadly hunting accident.

It happened shortly before nightfall in the town of Wales Tuesday.

In a news release, Corporal John MacDonald from the Maine Warden Service says that Gerard Parent, 49, and Christopher Austin, 41, both of Wales, were both hunting a deer off the East Road in Wales, near Route 126.

Corporal MacDonald says both men were carrying rifles and both fired at the deer. Parent fired once, Austin fired twice.

MacDonald says Austin's second shot struck and killed Parent.

Law enforcement officials conducted an extensive investigating Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The Attorney General's office, Medical Examiner's office and State Police are now joining in the investigation.
