PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Dozens of folks waited in line for several hours for a hot Thanksgiving meal in Portland Thursday.
Wayside Food Programs annual Thanksgiving dinner was held at the Portland Club. Four hundred people sat down to turkey and all the trimmings. The dinner was made possible thanks to dozens of volunteers and donations of food and cash from businesses in the Greater Portland area.
Officials with the program say things came down to the wire this year because many corporations have scaled back on donations because of the bad economy. One man, who spent years on the streets says he is grateful he has a place to go this Thanksgiving.
'I am so grateful to eat and have a roof over my head and so grateful to what everybody does in this place,' said Sorensen.
The United Way of Greater Portland is also one of the sponsors of the dinner, which has been taking place for 22 years.
