SKOWHEGAN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- The murder trial of Robert Nelson hit a standstill Friday in Skowhegan as a judge decides how to handle new witness testimony in the case.

Nelson is facing up to life in prison for the death of 60-year-old Everett Cameron of North Anson. Cameron was murdered on October 31, 2009.

The state claims Nelson shot Cameron in his pickup truck while it was parked on Town Farm Road in North Anson because he wanted the victim's prescription drugs. Cameron was a cancer patient who had been selling his prescription Oxycodone to Nelson and several other people in the area.

The state rested its case on Thursday. Prosecutors called several witnesses who said they saw Nelson's blue Dodge Intrepid at the scene on Town Farm Road minutes before Cameron was shot.

On Friday the defense called a couple who said they also noticed another vehicle parked next to Cameron's too at one point that same afternoon.

The state has no murder weapon in this case. According to the defense, Justice John Nivison did grant prosecutors a continuance on Friday so they could look for a bullet in a gravel pit in the Kingfield area that might have been fired from the gun that killed Cameron.

The trial is expected to resume on Monday.
