AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -  Days after the Connecticut school shootings, Maine's House speaker says legislative leaders from both parties will be conferring about creating a panel or holding a hearing to examine the problem of gun violence in regard to school safety.

Democratic Speaker Mark Eves of North Berwick says the move is in very early stages and it's not even known what the task force's makeup will be. But he says it will not be just legislators, and would likely include mental health specialists, school officials, police and public safety officials and hunting interests.

The speaker says the goal is to have a comprehensive review of the issue and not rush out recommendations. Eves says people first need time to process Friday's shooting in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children, seven adults and himself.
