PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A 24-year-old man's decision to stroll through Maine's largest city carrying an assault weapon similar to the one used in the Connecticut elementary school shootings is drawing fire from both gun control and gun rights advocates.

Justin Dean, of Portland, insists he wasn't making any sort of statement when he carried a loaded AR-15-style rifle through the city on Monday. He says he had the weapon for protection while exercising his Second Amendment rights.

People on both sides of the gun debate - in favor of and opposed to more gun control laws - say Dean could have picked a better way to exert his rights than by walking in a densely populated neighborhood and on a popular walking path with a menacing weapon, even though it was legal.
