ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There will be more police on patrol throughout Maine during this holiday season and into the new year. The crackdown is an effort to reduce the amount of drunk driving incidents in the state.

The campaign called "DriveSober, Maine!" was launched by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety earlier this month. It's designed to stop impaired drivers and save lives on Maine roads this holiday season and into next year. According to the bureau, alcohol related traffic deaths doubled in the first six months of 2012 with 32 OUI deaths compared to 15 deaths during that same period in 2011.

More than $400,000 has been divided between 52 Maine police agencies to increase patrols at times and locations where drunk driving is common.

The "DriveSober, Maine!" effort kicked off December 1st and runs through Labor Day of 2013.
