BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Friends and family of Derrick Thompson and Alivia Welch gathered Monday evening.

Hundreds of people gathered in Rotary Park for a candlelight vigil. It was organized by Derrick Thompson's friends and family. They described him as a passionate young man who could make anyone smile. Thompson's older sister Kari Henderson helped organize the vigil so that loved ones could be together to grieve.

"He was a great guy," Henderson said. "He was full of life. He had a lot going for him. He had his whole future ahead of him. He was into so many things: his truck, his girlfriend, his family. He was a good kid."

Thompson graduated from Biddeford High School in 2011 and worked as an auto detailer. Welch graduated last year from Thornton Academy and was a pre-nursing student at Southern Maine Community College.
