PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Winter can be difficult for families that relocate to Maine from countries with far warmer climates.
WinterKids held its annual Welcome to Winter event, to show those families how to enjoy the coldest months of the year.
Kids were outfitted in warm winter gear and then tried out sleds and snowshoes that were donated for the day. Winter Kids Executive Director Julie Mulkern says it's all about making families feel safe in the cold weather.
"Probably the best indicator of success is when you see a kid going down Payson Hill in a sled for the first time and you probably see a look of terror, and then you see them going down twenty more times" Mulkern said.
This was the ninth year for the Welcome to Winter event.
