AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Firefighters face challenges every day, but in just two weeks, many firefighter teams will be taking on a tough physical challenge in Boston: a stair climb while covered in 50 pounds of gear.

It's part of the American Lung Association's Fight for Air Climb.

The Auburn Fire Department came in second place at last year's climb out of about 30 New England teams; Portland came in first.

Firefighters race up 82 flights of stairs at One Boston Place for the best times. This year, Auburn has 12 firefighters on their team, including one member who battles asthma, making this cause one that's near and dear to his heart. They say they're determined to beat Portland for first place.

However, their Central Station is only 5 stories, so the guys have to get creative while training.  The teams run up and down the stairs a few times in a row, then take a break for some leg exercies.  When in Portland, they run up 16 flights of stairs at Franklin Towers, then take the elevator back down, just to run back up.

Each firefighter is required to raise at least $100 each.  To donate to the Auburn Fire Department, click here.
