PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Those of you who take Baxter Boulevard in Portland should plan on going a different way for the next 8 months. The Boulevard will be closed to traffic between Vannah Avenue and Bates Street beginning at 7 a-m Wednesday. You still will be able to use the Back Cove trail for exercise.

The city is working on a major project to reduce the amount of sewer overflow that is released into the water at Back Cove. Crews will be installing two one million gallon tanks that will store overflow during storms, allowing it to be treated after the storm passes. City officials said the more drivers they can get to avoid the area, the better.

Brad Roland, a Senior Project Engineer with the Department of Public Services said, "They're going to mindlessly take that normal route and then they're going to be upset when they get here. The more word we can get out that roads close at 7am, seek an alternate route, the better. "

The city is asking people who usually take the Boulevard to consider getting into the city on I-295 instead. If you come in from the west, take Brighton Ave. They say Forest and Ocean Avenues could become very congested, so you should avoid trying to detour there unless you are going to the neighborhood near the construction.
