WEST PARIS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Fire investigators say the building is a total loss and those in town say they've lost a piece of history, too.

The Old Penley Mill was West Paris' biggest employer from 1923 until it closed down in 2002. Mill workers earned their pay making clothes pins.

Fire investigators say that the fire started in the middle of the building and was buffeted by old wood and dust in the building.

In the summer of 2012, a fireworks company moved in. They were in the process of remodeling the mill to expand it.

Sergeant Joel Davis with the State Fire Marshal's Office says that the building was in compliance with fire code regarding the distance to nearby structures and that helped save the flames from spreading to the storage building housing fireworks.

Investigators will try to determine what sparked the blaze starting Wednesday morning.
