a. eye patch
Ford was born in Cape Elizabeth in 1894.
He started wearing the patch it after undergoing cataract surgery. He got so impatient with the bandages that he took them off too soon, leaving his vision permanently blurred in his left eye.
Luckily, he could still see well enough to set up his camera shots. And in fact, the first movie he shot after the surgery was "The Searchers," which is considered to be one of his most visually stunning movies.
