PORTSMOUTH, NH (NEWS CENTER) -- Crews are still cleaning up after a fire that swept through a residential building in downtown Portsmouth last night.

Everyone who lives in the building made it out safely, but it took firefighters several hours to get the fire under control and ensure that it didn't threaten any of the buildings nearby. The Portsmouth Fire Department is still investigating the cause, but the fire is believed to have started in the ceiling of one of the back, top floor units. The blaze went to five alarms because firefighters had a difficult time gaining access to the source of the fire to knock it down.

"We did have some very profound access issues, again it's set one building back from any road, we were not able to get any aerial apparatus, anything we got to the roof we had to either carry up or had to get strung up through flights of stairs and then up and over the roof" Portsmouth Deputy Fire Chief Carl Roediger said.

Investigators do believe the fire was accidental.
