EXETER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- About 40 firefighters in Central Maine were called out Monday night after a church caught fire in the town of Exeter.

Fire crews from five nearby towns responded to the church on Exeter Road a little after 8 p.m. Responders believe a wood stove caused the flames to break out at the Full Gospel Church of Exeter. No one was inside the church at the time. Its believed a neighbor called 9-1-1 after seeing the flames.

Firefighters managed to get the fire under control after about an hour. Much of the church was left standing. However responders say it did sustan smoke and water damages.

"Luckily we had a lot of mutual aid tankers tonight," said Shawn Richards, who is the assistant chief of the Corinna Fire Department, which covers Exeter, "it did take us a bit to get a water supply established but fortunately I don't think we ever ran out of water. We had a lot of tankers tonight so all in all it was a pretty decent night."

The state fire marshal's office is being called in to officially determine what caused the fire.
