Money owed.

The bills went to the state but they didn't get paid.  So the bills got bigger and bigger.

Now Maine's hospitals are in trouble.  According to Steven Michaud of the Maine Hospital Association, "Right now we're left with almost $500 million in debt."

How did the state fall this far behind?  And how do the hospitals cope with the debt?
