PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A 50-year-old woman was critically injured in a fire at a home on Burnside Avenue in Portland Sunday afternoon.

Portland Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria said the fire department arrived on scene just before noon.  They encountered flames shooting out of the front of the building, and a woman was standing outside the home with severe burns.  She was initially taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, and was subsequently taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a Boston area hospital in critical condition.

A nearby fire hydrant had to be dug out following Saturday's storm, but firefighters were able to knock down the flames quickly. The home sustained extensive damage in the fire.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.  The State Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to assist with the investigation.

Chief LaMoria said the critically injured woman was the only person home at the time of the fire.

LaMoria said it's important to be extra vigilant this time of year, and to make sure that you have working smoke detectors in your home.  LaMoria also urged members of the public to dig out fire hydrants near their home whenever possible.
