WISCASSET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A small fire in Wiscasset has landed two men in jail for burglary and theft and police say it's also connected to drugs.
Wiscasset police say the fire was reported late Monday night in a shed at the Mountain View trailer park. The fire destroyed the shed, which was close to the mobile home's fuel tank. But police and firefighters became suspicious when they saw a large amount of copper pipe and other metal inside the shed.
After asking more questions and checking other reports, Police Chief Troy Cline says they found out the metal had been stolen from two homes on the same road the day before. And the two men living in the trailer admitted to the crimes.
The two men are Ronald Williams and Tyler Miller. They have been charged with two counts each of burglary and theft. Williams was also charged with violating bail conditions. He was on bail for an earlier theft of copper pipe from another home.
Chief Cline says they believe the men were planning to sell the metal to get money to buy drugs. He also says the fire marshal's investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started.
