SOUTH BERWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Rescue crews are fighting flames at Berwick Academy.
South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie says that firefighters were called to the arts center at the school around 4:00 PM Tuesday.
Chief Lajoie says that the fire has escalated to two alarms. Firefighters from Dover and Berwick are at the scene.
Lajoie says the fire was called in by students rehearsing a production of "Les Miserables." The fire started near the front of the stage and ignited a curtain. About forty students and teachers were evacuated.
School officials are now assessing the damage. No word yet on a cause.
