RUMFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - 45 workers at the Rumford Paper Company will be losing their jobs as the mill's parent company makes cuts nationwide.
Nationally, 300 people will be laid off. NewPage Corporation owns eight paper mills across the U.S. They are cutting 5% of their workforce.
Tony Lyons, a spokesperson for the company, says the layoffs will include salaried and hourly workers and will take place over the next couple of months.
Lyons cites a decline in demand in the paper market, particularly in the past few months, as the reason for the layoffs.
He says in order for the Rumford Paper Company to stay competitive it has to reduce costs.
Lyons says the drop in demand may be a direct result of more on-line magazines and fewer physical magazines being produced.
