VINALHAVEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The case of a grandson charged with the murder of his grandparents in Virginia has connections to Vinalhaven, Maine.
The grandfather, John Philbrook, was from Vinalhaven, and still has family members living on the island.
"Everybody knew him," said Ira Warren, John's brother-in-law.
"It was quite a shock when I heard it."
Police say John and Virginia Philbrook were shot and killed in their Virginia home on February 12th.
Days later, their grandson, Robert Lee Philbrook was arrested and charged.
Court records state the grandson went to a pawn shop just after the shootings and sold $1,400 worth of jewelry, mostly belonging to his grandmother.
Warren said his brother-in-law was part of a large family in Vinalhaven. He said John worked as a police officer in New Jersey, then retired in Virginia.
Warren said his brother-in-law used to vacation in Vinalhaven.
