BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Volunteers were busy on Saturday trying to make a big difference for the Hammond Street Senior Center and one little guy who lives there.

Johnny is a house cat whose been with the center for the last four years. Groups have organized once again this winter to see to it that the building stays warm for him and his friends. Amedisys Home Healthcare is collecting returnable bottles and cans to help the senior center pay its heating bills.

The senior center provides year-round activities for people in the Bangor area. Private donations are a big part of what keeps it going. This winter directors at the center say it will cost about $10,000 to heat the building and that is why volunteers say every can or bottle collected will go a long way.

"We raised over $375 last time we did this," said Sadie Marsh, who is a community liaison for Amedisys, "and that's a lot of bottles...we did three to four truck-loads of bottles to the redemption centers locally."

"We all gradually collect bottles and cans...we want to get them out of our house. This is a great opportunity to donate your five cents each bottle to something that is providing services to our community," said Anne Donovan with Beacon Hospice, which is also helping with the drive.

Amedisys Home Health says it plans to keep collecting returnables to benefit the center over the course of the week. If you would like to donate your bottles and cans stop by the Brewer Redemption Center behind the North Brewer Shopping Center on North Main Street and say you want your returnables to benefit the Hammond Street Senior Center.
