PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The city of Portland has a reputation for having a permitting process that's tough to navigate. But it's taking steps to change that.
Starting next week, you can make an appointment for any Wednesday between 12-1 to meet with staff from planning, fire prevention, public services, inspections and history preservation. They'll go over your project and identify areas that might need work before you sink lots of money into plans that won't pass muster. To make an appointment, call Desiree Kelly at 874-8720.
Mayor Michael Brennan said, "I'm very excited about this. I think it's a terrific step forward for the city and it's going to make us much more responsive to major developments as well as homeowners who want to make an improvement."
The city also is working with an outside consultant to look at other ways to streamline the permitting process.
