LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A special prayer service was held in Lewiston Thursday, the same time the resignation of Pope Bendict was made official.
The service was held at the chapel of the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul. Parishioners say they are grateful for the Pope's ministry and that his decision to resign was an example of humility and faith.
They say the Catholic church needs a new leader to move the church beyond it's problems with child sexual abuse and make it more appealing to a new generation of followers.
'The church is in troubled times, we need somebody to lead the church to bring people back,' said Joseph Giguere, a parishioner.
Monsignor Marc Caron, the pastor of Prince of Peace Parish conducted the service.
