PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Young filmmakers in the greater Portland area are getting a chance to showcase their skills before the upcoming Portland Children's Film Festival later this spring.

A workshop was held at the East End Community School in Portland Saturday afternoon for filmmakers in grades K through 12 to get tips on producing their films that are being entered as part of the Young Filmmakers Contest.

As part of the contest, students submit a three-minute film incorporating the festival's theme, which this year is connections, including all film genres.

"Filmmaking is an excellent way for kids to express their creativity," Contest Chair Mark Shaughnessy said at the workshop Saturday. "You have to write a story, you have to work with technology, you have to collaborate with others, and then you get to produce something and have your peers see it."

This year's Portland Children's Film Festival runs from April 4th-7th. For more information on the festival, click here.
