ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - In today's technological world everything can be done online or on a smartphone.

Many of us do not think twice when we log onto our computers, but behind the scenes there is a group of people fighting to make sure our most private information stays private.

The annual Northeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition puts college students against some of the nation's best hackers to ensure the next generation is ready for anything.

Director of this year's NECCDC George Markowsky said, "You can only learn so much in the classroom and at some point you need to confront the real world."

Ten teams compete in a three day event where they go against some of the world's best hackers.

Markowsky said, "They are trying all the gimmicks and things that hackers use...teams have to figure out how to recover from that, how to defend, how to protect those services from those kinds of attacks."

Increasing technology calls for new and innovative ways to ward off attacks. These students said they want the public to be aware of the dangers and the efforts that go into keeping their information private.

University of Maine team captain Sean Lyford said, "Some people kind of just nod their head and say 'Yes, it's important,' but I don't think they ever really appreciate what's going on.

For those students hoping to make a career in cyber security, this competition is imperative to their learning.

Champlain College team captain Matthiew Morin said, "Cyber security has become a huge threat to national standards and what not. And being able to come in here as students and go against some of the best industry professional hackers in the world and kind of see what we are going to experience in the real world going into security it's amazing."

The winners of the Northeast division will move onto the national championship in Texas next month.
