BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Those looking to get their driver's licenses renewed or replaced will have a new option as to where they can get that service done.
A visit to a branch of the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) isn't usually something people look forward to. Often times people spend more time in the waiting area than they do getting assistance. To try to change that, the BMV has partnered with the automotive-related service company AAA. Folks will now be able to get their driver's license and state identification cards renewed and replaced at several AAA branches across the state. On Wednesday residents in Ellsworth, Brunswick, Auburn, South Portland and Biddeford were able to start taking advantage of the partnership.
"I think it's a good idea," said Ron Shorton of Corinna. "It gives people more options."
The AAA branch in Bangor started offering the service in January, with alot of interest. Maine Secretary of State, Matt Dunlap, headed up the partnership to lesson the work loads of BMVs across the state.
"We just want to expand the service level so that we can provide greater convenience and access to security for the public," said Secretary Dunlap.
The new service is available to both AAA members and the general public. Two types of licenses are being offered: a four year license for $23, or a 6 year license for $32. AAA office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm and Saturdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm.
