LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Fourth grade students, Zumba enthusiasts, and members of the Lewiston Rainbow Girls hit the dance floor to raise money Saturday afternoon.

The local Rainbow chapter - which is a nonprofit to empower young girls - is raising money for the 2016 International Rainbow convention.

Six New England states, including Maine, are helping to host the convention in Rhode Island.  This year, the International Rainbow Leader will be a Mainer.

Local organizer, Megan Skilling, chose Zumba as the fundraiser because she says her involvement in both activities has made her who she is today.

"It taught me to be confident in myself, and it taught me to how walk with poise and carry myself," she said. "To be able to speak in front of people and just be confident in myself no matter what size I was, how I was."

This is just the start of the chapter's fundraising efforts. The goal is to raise several thousand dollars.
