BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- About 80 kids from the Bangor area went to the Challenger Learning Center today to learn about rockets, and to watch a fellow Mainer launch into space.
In honor of York's Chris Cassidy blasting off to the International Space station today, the Challenger Learning Center set up tables where kids could build their own rocket ships. They also sectioned off an area of the building as a "launch pad", where the kids used empty soda bottles to blast off their rockets.
Staff was on hand to guide the kids, and to answer questions about today's space launch.
The launch was streamed live on a project screen in the Center so the kids could watch it as it was happening.
Representatives from the Challenger Learning Center said the organization's mission is to get kids excited about the possibility of pursuing careers science, technology and engineering.
