PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Massachusetts man who was arrested in Gorham yesterday after police say he was the lam for 35 years appeared in court briefly this afternoon.
Gary Alan Irving was convicted in 1978 of three different counts of rape with force, unnatural acts and kidnapping. He had been living in Gorham since at least 2002. He is married and has children. He was one of Massachusetts' Most Wanted Sex Offenders.
Irving was in court for a hearing on the fugitive from justice charges, but it was continued until Monday morning. His attorney, Christopher Leddy told the court he needed more time to look at the case.
Leddy told reporters that Irving's family had asked him not to comment and would like their privacy.
