ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the United States Forest Service, the nation's first Cellulose Nanofiber Pilot Plant celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday at the University of Maine.
The unveiling highlighted the 63rd Annual Paper Days at the University. The pilot plant features the newest technology used to manufacture cellulose nanofibers from wood. Nanofiber material is becoming the material of choice for products of the 21st century that aren't already using wood based material now. The nanofiber material could be used in flexible electronics and for improving strength properties in concrete cement.
The addition of the pilot plant means new jobs, new products and new opportunities for Maine.
