ROME, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Members of the media are being barred from seeing the campsite of a hermit who police say may be responsible for more than 1,000 burglaries in the Belgrade Lakes region. Scores of media were about to be led into Knight's campsite Thursday, but the owner of the land suddenly changed his mind and would not let any media go to the site.

The camp site has apparently been there for 27 years, built by a man named Christopher Knight, who was recently arrested for breaking into a camp on North Pond in the town of Rome.

Law enforcement officials spent much of the afternoon Thursday hauling scores of items from the campsite in the woods of Rome.

Knight told police and game wardens he went into the woods back in April 1986, when he was just 20 years old. He stayed there year round for nearly three decades, always sneaking out at night to break into camps to take only what he needed

He was caught when motion sensor cameras were set up at the Pine Tree Camp on the south end of the lake. Wardens then anticipated his next strike and got lucky, arresting him a week ago.
