ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Students from the Student Police Academy at Husson University found themselves in a stand off situation that lasted throughout the day Saturday. It wasn't a real school shooting they were dealing with, but it sure felt that way for some.

Around 80 student participated in an active shooting response scenario that was held at Orono High School. They were put in situations that simulated the realities of what real police officers deal with when an active shooter goes into a school setting with the intent to kill.

"Even though you know it's a scenario, like it's real as real can be and you have to put yourself as if it was a real situation," said Sophomore Caroline Casey.

In addition to her training, students from other majors that Husson offers also participated in roles relevant to their potential future careers as educators, nurses, clinicians, counselors and journalists. The scenarios all students were put in were in a controlled environment under the watchful eye of the Orono Police Department.

"We hope that what they take away is the ability to stay as safe as they possibly can and not to be in the denial that this can't happen any where," said Sgt. Scott Wilcox from the Orono Police Department.
