GEORGETOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office is investigating a single car crash in Georgetown that left one man dead Saturday night.
Police were called to Bay Point Road for the report of a vehicle off the road around 9:45 p.m. Saturday. Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and found a single car with one person inside near 280 Bay Point Rd.
The driver has been identified as 24-year-old Henry S. Gilliam III from Georgetown. When rescue personnel arrived on scene, they found Gilliam with severe injuries and requested Life Flight.
Police said attempts to stabilize Gilliam were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead on scene.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said the car was traveling north on Bay Point Road when it veered off the road and hit several large trees.
Gilliam was not wearing a seatbelt, and alcohol is considered a contributing factor.
Police aren't sure what time the accident actually happened. A passerby motorist discovered the car off the road when they saw headlights down an embankment.
The accident remains under investigation by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office.
