Portland Police shut down part of the Bayside neighborhood during a standoff Monday afternoon.

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A standoff in Portland ended peacefully Monday evening after the suspect surrendered to police.

Police said 28-year-old Kyle Upton was arrested following a four and a half hour standoff.

Police were called to a home at 41 Alder St. around 3 p.m. to follow up on a domestic violence call.  The incident had been reported at the Portland Police Department earlier in the day.

When authorities arrived on scene, a man at the apartment barricaded himself inside, and police believed he was armed.

A Portland Police Department tactical unit was called in to negotiate with the suspect, and negotiations lasted for several hours Monday afternoon.

Police said the suspect surrendered peacefully late Monday evening shortly after 7 p.m.

Authorities said no one else was home at the time of the standoff, and no one was injured.

Several nearby apartments were evacuated as the standoff was ongoing, and streets in the area were closed.  After Upton surrendered, streets were reopened around 7:30 p.m.

Upton, who is homeless, was staying with acquaintances in the Alder Street apartment, but was alone throughout the standoff.

He was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, terrorizing, assault, and causing a police standoff.
